
Ditching the Old Way: Drying MEMS Wafers with IR
When you’re making MEMS sensors, getting the moisture off those wafers is a bit of a tightrope walk. You need the water gone—and fast—but if you mess up the heat, you’ll stress the material and ruin the batch. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. Think about a standard convection oven. It heats up everything—the air, the walls, the whole room—just to dry one wafer. It’s a waste. IR is different. It hits the wafer surface directly. No middleman. The physics of it is actually pretty simple. These lamps turn electricity into radiant heat. We set them up to pack a lot of power into a tiny space, which makes the water basically flash off the surface in a few seconds. Since you aren’t trying to heat the air around the wafer, you stop throwing energy away. That’s where the “green” part comes in. Less wasted heat means a smaller carbon footprint. Simple as that. Now, the gear itself. We build these with tungsten filaments inside high-purity quartz. To make them really effective, we add special coatings to the quartz. This is the secret sauce—it makes sure the energy targets the water droplets and doesn’t just soak into the silicon substrate. But here’s a heads-up: watch your power cycles. These lamps are fast because they’re powerful, but they hit your power supply hard. If your wiring isn’t ready for that initial surge of current when you flip the switch, you’re going to be replacing fuses more often than you’d like. Bringing it into the factory. If you’re still using old gas-fired systems or massive ovens, swapping them for IR arrays is a no-brainer. It cuts down the total kWh you use per wafer. We design these to be drop-in replacements, so you don’t have to shut down your entire line for weeks just to upgrade. You get your wafers through the process faster, and your emissions drop. Just one thing to keep in mind: the more intensity you crank up, the more you have to worry about cooling the lamp housing. If you don’t, you’ll end up melting your connectors, and that’s a headache nobody wants.
