
Why we’re switching to IR Curing for Wafers
Let’s talk about the old way of doing things. For years, we’ve relied on massive convection ovens and a cocktail of harsh chemicals to dry wafers. It worked, sure, but it was clunky. Nowadays, going “green” or “lead-free” isn’t just a box to check for some regulator. It’s about getting rid of those nasty volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and actually lowering the carbon footprint inside the cleanroom. It just makes sense.
How IR actually works
Think about a convection oven. You’re heating up the air, then waiting for that air to heat the wafer. It’s slow. It’s wasteful. IR lamps are different. They use electromagnetic radiation to hit the wafer surface directly. No more heating up a giant metal box and the air around it just to get the job done. The result? You ramp up almost instantly. Your throughput goes up, and your electricity bill goes down. It’s a win-win.
Getting the specs right without the toxins
Old-school curing usually meant using solvents that you had to “burn out” with extreme heat. With IR, we can tune the wavelength. We can target the specific parts of the photoresist or adhesive that need the heat without cooking the silicon substrate itself. Because it’s so precise, you don’t get those toxic fumes off-gassing into the room. Plus, it means we can stop using lead-based stabilizers in the curing agents. It’s a cleaner way to work.
The trade-offs (because nothing is perfect)
Now, here’s the catch. High-intensity IR arrays put out a ton of heat in a very small space. If your cooling isn’t dialed in, you’re asking for trouble. You can end up warping the wafer or literally melting your lamp connectors. There’s always a tug-of-war between speed and uniformity. If you put the lamp closer to the wafer, it cures faster. But you also risk creating “hot spots.” You have to find that sweet spot—a precise safety distance—to keep everything even. We built these systems to be drop-in replacements for those power-hungry old ovens. You get more space on your floor and less money leaving your bank account. Simple as that.
